Chargers Lose Close Game 6

April 1, 2004 – Soccerzone – Portage, Michigan

The Chargers played Main Street/TH tonight, a team the Chargers had never met before in league play. The Chargers have had a tough run in the premiere league this season but have been in every game, this one included. With several Charger team members absent, Charger veterans Keith Weitz (Dec Tech) and Aaron Ureel (Process Improvement) were called up from the men’s team to fill in. It would prove to be a very fast paced game from the start.

The Chargers matched up well with the Main Street squad and the game would prove to be very close all the way. In fact, the game remained scoreless for the first nine minutes until a Main Street girl slipped the ball just past Charger keeper Leslie Stafford (IPDS) to make the score Chargers 0, Main Street 2. The Chargers responded immediately when John Marucci (New Product) found the net a minute later to make it a one-goal game. The game remained very fast and without a goal for the next seven minutes until Marucci again found the net to tie the game. After a verbally abusive altercation with the referees from a Main Street girl player and a resultant red card expulsion, the game went to halftime tied 2-2. Because of the red card, the Chargers would start the second half with a man advantage for six minutes.

The second half began with the Chargers coming out strong but not immediately being able to take advantage of the power play. It wasn’t until the six-minute penalty was almost over that Catie Lewis (Recovery) found Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) open in front of the Main Street goal. Schoenherr turned on the keeper and forced the ball into the net. The Chargers now had a 3-2 lead with just over 19 minutes in the game. The lead would last for only three minutes as the Main Street team got its second girl-goal to retake the lead 4-3. On the ensuing kickoff, however, it was Marucci again, dribbling a defender and knocking a left-foot shot past the Main Street goalkeeper to tie the game. There were now 14 minutes remaining, a tie score, and both teams at full pace. The tie would remain for only three minutes until a Main Street girl hit a rebound from long distance into the upper corner of the Charger goal. It was now 6-4 Main Street with 11 minutes to go. Although the Chargers fought hard the final 10 minutes, and kept the Main Street team from scoring, they were unable themselves to score. Final Score: Chargers 4, Main Street 6.

“We played well tonight and everyone put in a great effort,” said Marucci, “we actually outscored them 4-3, but when one factors in the girl-goals, of which they had three, they won. I thought Leslie did very well in goal and made some great saves. It was very fast paced and non-stop. I also was proud of the team for keeping cool when the other team was getting very upset, we showed real professionalism and represented the company well at a time when it would have been easy to lose our cool.”

The next Charger’s game will be on Thursday, April 8th at 7:40pm at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers.
