Chargers Take Loss in Season 3 Game Opener

February 27, 2004 – Soccerzone – Portage, Michigan

The Chargers played team Kickin It tonight, an unbeaten team the Chargers had never met before in league play. The Chargers came into the game with an undefeated record for the first two seasons of indoor play and without a loss since May 30th of last year. The Season 3 team would have 6 new players in Charger uniforms and the Chargers would be without prolific goal-scorer Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) for this game, being sidelined with a foot injury. The Chargers were also moved up a division due to their prior record.

The Chargers faced a tough first few minutes as the Kickin It squad began pressuring the Charger goal early. The Chargers did hold their own for the first few minutes until a shot rebounded and was cleared into the path of a Kickin It girl player, who put in away. Score: Chargers 0, Kick It 2. Two minutes later it was again a Kickin It player with a shot from outside that just alluded Charger goalkeeper Dan Graham. The Chargers were now down by 3 just six minutes into the game. The Chargers were not without offensive opportunity, however, as Paul Monacelli (Collections) and Catie Lewis (Collections) both had nice shots just barely saved. Unfortunately, about half-way thorough the half, the Kickin It team again had a free kick that was well struck and sailed just past Graham in goal. Score at halftime: Chargers 0, Kickin It 4.

The second half began with the Chargers holding their own against the fast Kickin It team. The game went without a goal for the first seven minutes of the half, until John Marucci (New Product) won an errant pass in the Kickin It end, dribbled an opponent, and sent the ball into the Kickin It net. Score: Chargers 1, Kickin It 4. The Chargers had several other very near misses in front of the Kickin It goal within the next few minutes. Pete Rose (Collections) very nearly placed the ball over the Kickin It goalkeeper on a fast break, and Lewis almost converted on a nice shot that was deflected. The game remained 4-1 against the Chargers until the final seven minutes, when a Kickin It breakaway found a girl open for a goal. Score: Chargers 1, Kickin It 6. Within the next four minutes, team Kickin It put two more in against the Chargers on extremely powerful shots. The Chargers had one more very good opportunity with only a few minutes remained, but it was saved by the Kickin It goalkeeper. Final score: Chargers 1, Kickin It 8.

“We actually did okay tonight even though the final score shows otherwise,” said Marucci, “we created lots of opportunities on their goal and most simply didn’t drop. They had one very good player who basically either scored their goals or set them up. I think we’ll do well when we play them again. I think the new players on the team will integrate well over the next few games and gain confidence. As that occurs, we should do just fine. Overall a pretty good effort from everyone.”

The next Charger’s game will be on Thursday, March 4th at 7:40pm at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers.
