Chargers Finish Season 1 UndefeatedDecember 12, 2003 – Soccerzone – Portage, MichiganThe Chargers played WMU Aviation tonight, a team they beat earlier in the season 8-3. The Chargers would be without Leslie Stafford (IPDS) and Catie Lewis (Recovery), giving both Stacie Vezeau (Collections) and Lori Eggerding (Collections) no subs for the entire game. The Chargers were one game away from finishing the first indoor season undefeated. The first half started much closer than anticipated, with both teams playing hard and fighting for the midfield. The game remained scoreless until the eighth minute when John Marucci (New Product) scored on a rebound from a Keith Weitz (Dec Tech) kick in. It was only three minutes later when WMU evened the scored on a loose ball in the Charger box. With seven minutes remaining in the half, the Chargers again took the lead when Marucci stole the ball in the WMU end and placed the ball into the back of the net. WMU equalized again at the very end of the first half on a penalty kick. Score at Half Time: Chargers 2, WMU 2. The second half started off as tough as the first half had ended. The outcome of the game was far from certain and the Chargers were short of subs. The Chargers did convert a third goal six minutes into the half, when Marucci found a rebound, beat a defender and placed the ball into the WMU net. Score: Chargers 3, WMU 2. Three minutes later it was Stacie Vezeau in perfect position, scoring her first goal of the season for the Chargers on a nice shot in front of the WMU goal. Score: Chargers 5, WMU 2. The WMU squad scored five minutes later on a penalty shoot out on second-half goalkeeper Keith Weitz. The game would remain 5-3 for only three minutes when Marucci netted his fourth goal on a nice pass from Ryan Potter (Collections). Weitz then put on a goalkeeping clinic with three outstanding saves in the final few minutes of the game to solidify the Charger lead. Final Score: Chargers 6, WMU 3. “It was a pretty close game overall,” said Marucci, “we were neck-and-neck most of game. Everyone play well and we took advantage of our opportunities. What a great season, we did exceedingly well and outscored our opponents by nearly 3 to 1. Congrats to Stacie (Vezeau) for scoring her first goal since the team started and to Lori (Eggerding) for great hustle. Congrats also to Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) for scoring a team leading 21 goals this season (yes, he beat the captain by one goal) and on his graduation from WMU.” The next Charger’s game will be on Friday, January 2nd at 6:45pm at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers. |
