Chargers Win in Game 7 “Barnburner”February 13, 2004 – Soccerzone – Portage, MichiganThe Chargers played Perrigo tonight, a team the Chargers have never faced before. The Chargers would be without goal scorer Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) once again and veteran Charger Stacie Vezeau (Collections). It was evident from the onset of the game that the Perrigo team, with their 5-1 record, second only to the Chargers, would not be a push over team to play. The game started hard fought and fast and never let up the entire game. It would prove to be the Chargers closest win ever. The Chargers opened up the scoring five minutes into the first half with Catie Lewis (Collections) receiving a John Marucci (New Product) through ball and slotting it past the Perrigo goalkeeper. Score: Chargers 2, Perrigo 0. The game remained very fast and even for the next 10 minutes as both teams struggled for possession of the ball. The Chargers did appear to have more of the play and missed on several opportunities during this time. A break did come with 10 minutes remaining in the first half when Marucci found Keith Weitz (Dec Tech) free in front of the Perrigo goal. Weitz put the ball past the keeper to give the Chargers a 3-0 lead. Perrigo quickly came back, however, and two minutes later scored their first goal on a nice individual effort. Less than a minute later the same Perrigo player again broke free and netted a second goal. Score: Chargers 3, Perrigo 2. The Chargers quickly responded with a Marucci to Kevin Tenant (Inbound) goal just 30 seconds after the last Perrigo goal to make it 4-2. Perrigo then responded with yet another goal 40 seconds later to make the game 4-3. After the four-goal flurry in four minutes, the next five-minutes remained goal-free. Charger Chris Young (Collections), however, did score a great solo goal with just 14 seconds in the half. Score at half: Chargers 5, Perrigo 3. The second half started the same way the first half ended, fast and hard fought. The Chargers were obviously in for a dogfight for the entire half. A well-executed goal did come for the Chargers eight minutes into the half when Lewis played a perfect pass to Young in front of the Perrigo goal. Young “dummied” the ball (let it run by him) as Marucci was overlapping into the space behind him. The move by Young confused the Perrigo defense and allowed Marucci time to pick his spot on goal. Score: Chargers 6, Perrigo 3. Two minutes later (16 minutes remaining in the game) it was Young again on a solo run putting a perfect shot past the Perrigo keeper to make it a 7-3 game. The Chargers now had a solid lead, however, there was much time left and Perrigo showed no signs of giving up. In fact, just two minutes later Perrigo scored a girl-goal on a nice rebound shot. The score was now 7-5 with 14 minutes to go. Momentum was beginning to shift with this goal by Perrigo and the Chargers appeared to be in for a long 14 minutes of play. The game tightened up significantly for the next 10 minutes, and play gained even more urgency as Perrigo brought on several unsuccessful attacks, two of which ended up in very near misses (see video clips). A final break came for Perrigo with just three minutes remaining when Marucci mis-cleared a corner kick into the Charger goal. The own goal by Marucci made it a one-goal game and gave the Perrigo team even more momentum for a final push. The final three minutes were very intense, however, the Chargers were able to withstand the onslaught. Final Score: Chargers 7, Perrigo 6. “Just an incredibly fast and competitive game,” said Marucci, “both teams played very well and never let up. It was easily the toughest win that I can remember. We simply haven’t been in many dogfights lately, but this was one for the books. One could simply never relax at any time during the match. We did score some good goals, and their keeper played very well. I thought Chris (Young) scored a couple of clutch goals when we needed them most. Everyone hustled well.” The next Charger’s game will be on Friday, February 20th at 8:35pm at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers. |
