Chargers Win Game 8 to Finish Season Undefeated

February 20, 2004 – Soccerzone – Portage, Michigan

The Chargers played O’Duffys tonight, a team the Chargers beat handily (13-3) on January 2nd of this year. The Chargers came into the game with a 7-0-0 record having scored 66 goals in the last seven games. A win would make their record 16-0-0 for the indoor season.

The Chargers came out of the gate in full force as Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) dribbled the opening kick off down the field and put a shot past the O’Duffy goalkeeper. The game was less than a 30 seconds old and the Chargers were on top 1-0. About three minutes later, it was Schoenherr again finding a loose ball in front of the O’Duffy goal and tapping it into the net. Score: Chargers 2, O’Duffys 0. The Chargers controlled the next 21 minutes of the first half, yet without scoring - the O’Duffy goalkeeper made save after save on Charger opportunities. Score at halftime: Chargers 2, O’Duffys 0.

The second half continued with the Chargers dominating play and creating opportunities on goal. A break came three minutes into the half when Pete Rose (Collections) found a rebound that was bobbled by the O’Duffy goalkeeper and slipped it into the net. Score: Chargers 3, O’Duffys 0. Three minutes later it was Schoenherr again finding another rebound and smacking it home. The Chargers were now up 4-0 with 19 minutes left in the game. The next fifteen minutes were a display of great goalkeeping from the O’Duffy keeper. The Chargers continued to dominate play during this period, and several Chargers had shots that were denied by outstanding goalkeeping. A break came for O’Duffys with five minutes remaining when a good shot for an O’Duffy girl deflected against the boards and off of the arm of Charger goalkeeper Keith Weitz (Dec Tech) and into the net. The score was now Chargers 4, O’Duffys 2, and the momentum was now solidly on the side of O’Duffys. The final five minutes witnessed O’Duffys hitting many shots on goal, all of which were saved or deflected by Weitz. The Chargers held their ground and repelled every attack. Final Score: Chargers 4, O’Duffys 2.

“We played very well tonight,” said Marucci, “we dominated play and beat them to the ball all night. Their goalkeeper kept them in the game and allowed them to counter attack in the final five minutes. It could easily have been 10 to 2 had their keeper not done well. We played great defense tonight as well. Leslie (Stafford) (IPDS) and Jessica (Awe) both played very well and stole many errant passes. Kevin (Tenant) (Inbound) and Ken (Fouts) also contributed substantially to the cause. Congrats on another undefeated season! Thanks also to Ken and Jessica for joining us this season, and also to Keith and Kevin who will be moving to the men’s team only going forward. Also to Chris Young who is shipping out to Iraq next week. Chris was a big addition to the team scoring eight goals in six games. We wish him well.”

The next Charger’s game will be on Friday, February 27th at 7:40pm at Soccerzone in Portage. The Chargers begin the final eight-week indoor season with five new players and high hopes to continue the undefeated streak. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers.
