Chargers Win Game Three and Stay UndefeatedJanuary 15, 2004 – Soccerzone – Portage, MichiganThe Chargers played the Sidekicks team, a team they had never matched up against before this evening. After winning their first two games of the second indoor season handily, the Chargers were now battling against the only other undefeated team in their bracket. A win would give the Chargers solo lead of the league and a definite leg up on the other teams for the league title. The first half started with the Chargers winning most of the play and controlling the midfield. The Sidekick goalkeeper came up with several critical saves early on, however, it seemed like a simple matter of time until the Chargers would convert. This happened four minutes into the game, when new Charger, Chris Young (Collections), dribbled several defenders and placed a nice shot past the Sidekick keeper. Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) had several breakaways as well in the first 15 minutes and did get one past the tough Sidekick goalkeeper at the 13-minute mark. Score: Chargers 2, Sidekicks 0. The Sidekicks did manage to score four minutes after Schoenherr’s goal, however, the Chargers continued to mount attack after attack on the Sidekick goal. With just two minute remaining in the first half, it was John Marucci (New Product), winning the ball directly in front of the Sidekick goal, dribbling the goalkeeper, and pushing the ball into the net. Schoenherr had his second goal with seconds left in the first half as Marucci put a through pass to him on stride, which he finished nicely. Score at half: Chargers 4, Sidekicks 1. The second half started off as the first half had ended. Less than a minute into the second half, it was Young for his second goal to make it a 5-1 ballgame. The Chargers didn’t let up in the second half, however, the Sidekick keeper continued to stop shot after shot. Keith Weitz (Dec Tech) was now in goal for the Chargers and made some nice saves as well to keep the score where it was. Both teams battled for the remainder of the half without anyone scoring. Final Score: Chargers 5, Sidekicks 1. “The score didn’t really depict the game all that well,” said Marucci, “we had many more chances that didn’t go in than the score shows. Their goalkeeper was outstanding. I was pleased that we seemed to control the game and set the pace. We also were tough on defense and kept them from having many chances. Keith made a couple of good saves in the second half as did Pete Rose (Collections) in the first half. Stacie Vezeau (Collections) and Catie Lewis (Collections) both played solid again, as did our two new players, Jessica Awe and Chris Young. The next Charger’s game will be on Friday, January 23rd at 9:30pm at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers. |
