Chargers Cruise on in Game 5 Triumph

January 29, 2004 – Soccerzone – Portage, Michigan

The Chargers played the Stratman Returns team, a team the Chargers have never faced before. The Chargers would be without goal scorer Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) and veteran Charger Leslie Stafford (IPDS). Could the Chargers overcome and extend their undefeated streak to 27?

The first half started with both teams working to win the ball and with only a few chances being created. The Chargers again started off a bit flat and it was Stratman who was first to score with just two minutes gone in the game. One of their girls put a shot past Charger keeper Pete Rose (Collections) to make it a 2-0 game for Stratman. The Chargers remained 2-0 down for the next six minutes until Keith Weitz (Dec Tech) and John Marucci (New Product) teamed up for some nice passing and a final shot from Marucci that beat the Stratman goalkeeper. Chargers1, Stratman 2. The game remains 2-1 Stratman for the next seven minutes until Kevin Tenant (Inbound) drilled his own rebound past the Stratman keeper off a free kick from a bad angle. The Chargers now began to turn on the power and netted four goals in the next four minutes with Marucci scoring his second on a nice through pass from Catie Lewis (Collections), Marucci scoring again on a solo shot from outside, and Lewis scoring with great position play behind the Stratman goalkeeper who had lost control of the ball. Score at halftime: Chargers 6, Stratman 2.

The second half began with the Chargers taking firm control of the game. Within three minutes of the start of the half, it was Marucci netting his fourth goal of the night on a hard shot from outside. Score: Chargers 7, Stratman 2. The Chargers then settled into a solid defensive game and kept the Stratman offense without many chances. The game remained 7-2 until Rose was put in the penalty box with three minutes left in the game, after committing a foul. After the foul, which Rose paid a physical price for (see “Pete Rose Attacked” video clip), it would be up to Weitz, now in goal, to stopped a shootout opportunity for Stratman. Weitz was quick off his line and cut the angle on the Stratman shooter, forcing her to place a shoot to his right for an easy deflection away from goal. The Chargers then successfully killed the two-minute penalty and finished the game keeping the Stratman offense at bay. Final Score: Chargers 7, Stratman 2.

“Another very solid team win,” said Marucci, “we again started off flat for a good part of the first half, and then began dominating play. I knew we could come from behind again and did nicely. I think our defense won the game tonight. We simply kept them from being able to get shots off. Kevin Tenant, Ken Fouts, and Jessica Awe all played strong defensively. I also thought Catie Lewis and Stacie Vezeau both hustled well to dog their defenders. We converted most of our chances and shot well also. Now it’s on to play the top two teams in the league, I’m sure they won’t be cakewalks.”

The next Charger’s game will be on Friday, February 6th at 10:25pm at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers.
