Chargers Lose Close Game 5

March 25, 2004 – Soccerzone – Portage, Michigan

The Chargers played North 11 tonight, the second place team and one the Chargers had never met before in league play. The Charger’s squad came into the game after last week’s loss ready to play. The game would prove to be very close and fast paced.

The Chargers scored early only three minutes into the first half, when Catie Lewis (Recovery) put a nice pass to David Olson (Collections) who placed the ball past the North 11 keeper. North 11, however, would come back quickly and tie the game only 20 seconds later. The game was very hard fought and fast and remained tied for the next nine minutes until the North 11 team won a break away and scored with 13 minutes remaining in the half. North 11 scored again quickly on another breakaway two minutes later. The game remained 3-1 against the Chargers until the third minute when North 11 again took advantage of an errant Charger pass and converted. They again scored with only one-minute remaining in the half to make it 5-1. The Chargers would have a large deficit to overcome being down by four goals at half.

The second half saw the Chargers coming out strong. Olson again scored six minutes into the half to close the gap to three. Both teams fought hard and the North 11 keeper stopped several shots at close range. At one point the North 11 keeper was beat and the Charger shot cleared off the goal line by a North 11 player just as the ball was going in. The Chargers did close to within one goal when Lewis found a Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) rebound and put it away. The score was now 5-4 North 11 with nine minutes to go in the game. The Chargers turned it on and produced several good chances, including two shots that the North 11 keeper saved at close range and one that hit the post and careened out of the North 11 goalmouth. One the other end, Charger keeper Pete Rose (Collections) made some great saves to keep the game close. Both teams fought hard, but it was a girl goal by a North 11 player with four minutes remaining that took the wind out of the Charger’s sails and thwarted the comeback. Final score: Chargers - 4, North 11 - 7.

“We played a very good team tonight and hung in with them well,” said Marucci, “they had the best keeper I’ve seen on any team we’ve played against and he made some key saves to keep their lead. Overall we did well to fight our way back into the game and win the second half. Overall a pretty good effort from everyone.”

The next Charger’s game will be on Thursday, April 1st at 6:45pm at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers.
