Chargers Push Through Games Four & Five in StyleNovember 13-14, 2003 – Soccerzone – Portage, MichiganThe Chargers ensured a winning season this weekend taking back-to-back games against foes from prior outdoor matches. Thursday night’s game was against Electronicare and Friday nights match was against WMU Aviation. Both games proved to be excellent matches for the Chargers. The Thursday night’s game against Electronicare began with Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) scoring early. By midway though the first half the score was Chargers 5, Electronicare 1, with Schoenherr having scored three goals and Pete Rose (Collections) having scored two. The score remained 5-1 until the final three minutes of the first half when with 2:55 remaining John Marucci (New Product) scored the sixth Chargers goal. The flurry then began again with Keith Weitz (Dec Tech) scoring with 1:40 remaining, and Schoenherr netted his fourth goal with only 10 seconds left in the half. Score at halftime: Chargers 8, Electronic Care 1. The second half was tough fought and the Electronicare team seemed to be getting frustrated as play didn’t go their way. Just four minutes into the second half it was Schoenherr once again scoring with a perfect header. The score was now Chargers 9, Electronicare 1. The Chargers then went into a defensive game and held the Electronicare team scoreless for most of the second half. Electronicare did get a girl goal with two minutes remaining. Final Score: Chargers 9, Electronicare 3. The Chargers Friday night game against WMU Aviation was scoreless and hard fought for the first 16 minutes of the first half. Both team played well and neither team made defensive errors. The break came for the Chargers with nine minutes left in the first half on a very nice passing play from Catie Lewis (Recovery) to Schoenherr. Score: Chargers 1, WMU 0. The game again stayed at a close 1-0 score for another five minutes, until Marucci fed a pass to Schoenherr in front of the WMU goal to put the Chargers ahead at half-time 2-0. The second half was again very hard fought and fast paced. Both teams were hustling very hard to win the ball. Another break came for the Chargers a few minutes into the second half with a Weitz to Marucci to Schoenherr to Marucci combination passing play. Score: Chargers 3, WMU 0. With 20 minutes left in the second half, Lewis scored her first goal of the season on a great shot from a bad angle. This put the Chargers ahead 5-0. WMU didn’t give up, however, and returned by scoring a goal shortly thereafter Lewis’ goal. The Chargers made it 6-1 with 14 minutes to go when Marucci found a bouncing rebound in the WMU box. WMU scored another goal moments later to make it 6-2, however, Lewis put the icing on the cake with her second goal of the night from a Marucci pass. WMU did manage one more goal with 6 minutes remaining, but that was it. Final Score: Chargers 8, WMU 3. “I’m very proud of the team,” said Marucci, “we played the past two nights in a row, stayed focused, and maintained a high level of intensity in both games. Marcus’ five-goal night helped us greatly against a physical Electronicare team and Catie’s two goals and one assist in tonight’s game put us over WMU nicely. Our defense also did a great job shutting down both teams. Probably the two best games we’ve played to date.” On another note, while commenting on the close score during most of the WMU match, Ryan Potter (Collections) was heard saying, “I don’t relax until we’re ahead by at least six goals.” The next Charger’s game will be on Friday, November 21st at 8:35 at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers. |
