Chargers Win Game Six Handily to Clinch League TitleNovember 21, 2003 – Soccerzone – Portage, MichiganThe Chargers clinched the league title Friday night in yet another powerful offensive display against the Kalsec Reds team. The Chargers faced the Reds in Game 1 and came away with an 8-4 win. Tonight the Chargers put their mark on the game often with some great goals, and the Charger defense never gave the Reds a chance to get close. The game remained a scoreless draw for the first 11 minutes, as both teams fought hard for control of the ball. The Chargers then opened the scoring when Catie Lewis (Recovery) scored on a nice pass from Marcus Schoenherr (Collections). Less than a minute later, it was Lewis returning the favor and setting up Schoenherr for his first goal of the night. Another minute went by and this time it was John Marucci (New Product) feeding Schoenherr for his second goal. There were about 10 minutes remaining in the first-half and the Chargers were ahead 4–0. The Reds quickly countered with two goals in less than a minute period to pull the game close at 4-2. This, however, would be the closest the Reds would get, as David Olson (Collections) netted two goals within a two-minute period immediately after the Reds’ goals. Score with 7 Minutes left in the half: Chargers 6, Reds 2. Lewis then converted her second goal of the night with four minutes remaining to give the Chargers an 8-2 lead at half. The second half continued with the Chargers dominating the game and taking many shots on the Reds goalkeeper. Five minutes into the half it was Marucci dribbling into the Reds’ goalmouth and pushing the ball past the keeper to make it 9-2. Less than a minute later it was Marucci again scoring, this time redirecting a perfect corner kick from Schoenherr. The score remained 10-2 Chargers for about five minutes until Pete Rose (Collections) dribbled free and netted a nice shot past the Reds’ keeper. The final goal for the Chargers came with only a minute thirty remaining in the game, when Lewis shot the ball between the Reds goalkeeper’s legs and into the net for her third goal of the night. Final Score: Chargers 13, Kalsec Reds 2. “The team played extremely well tonight,” said Marucci, “we kept the ball away from their talented players, played solid team defense, and put away many of our chances. Congrats to Catie (Lewis) on her first hat trick since the team started. The last two games she’s added 10 goals on offense. I knew when she started scoring it would be like a dam breaking. I think our defense deserves some credit as well. Although Marcus, David and I all put two goals in each, I’m even more impressed on how we as a team stopped so many of their attacks with good defensive hustle. We simply dogged their best two players out of the game. Lori (Eggerding) and Stacie (Vezeau) both played well on defense, as did Kevin (Tenant) and Ryan (Potter).” The Chargers have this week off for Thanksgiving. The next Charger game, against the tough Chummers team, is scheduled for Friday night December 5th at 7:40pm. This will be an official “Cheer Your Chargers” event game and will be advertised to all of NCCS. |
