Chargers Roll On in Game Three Blow Out

November 7, 2003 – Soccerzone – Portage, Michigan

The Chargers played Game Three tonight against SZ Watford, a team they have had much success against during the outdoor season. The last time these two teams met, the Chargers won 12-1. After a week’s break, and a very tough game last time out, the Chargers would need to quickly put their stamp on the game.

The Chargers set the tone of the game very early when during the opening kickoff, Marcus Schoenherr (Collections), stole the ball from the Watford defenders and slipped the ball past the goalkeeper to make the game 1-0. Twenty seconds had gone by and the Chargers were already on top. The game remained tight at 1-0 for nearly 10 minutes after this initial Charger goal. This would be the only time during the match that the score would remain this close. At the 10-minute mark it was John Marucci (New Product) finding Pete Rose (Collections) for a nice passing play and goal. Score: Chargers 2, Watford 0. Two minutes later it was Marucci again, this time finding a wide-open Leslie Stafford in front of the Watford goal. Score: Chargers 4, Watford 0. Watford did come back and score shortly after Stafford’s goal with a girl-goal of their own. The game appeared close again at 4-2 with 12 minutes remaining in the first half, however, one could tell that at some point shortly the dam was about to break. This occurred in the final eight minutes of the first half with two goals from Schoenherr at the 17th and 20th minutes, a goal from Kevin Tenant (Inbound) in the 24th minute (between the goalkeeper’s legs), and another goal from Rose with only seconds remaining. Score at half: Chargers 8, Watford 2.

The second half began with a continuation of the Chargers dominating play. With just a minute and half gone in the second half, it was Keith Weitz on the end of a free kick putting the ball past the Watford goalkeeper to make the game 9-2. Schoenherr then took over again for the Chargers scoring his 4th and 5th goals of the night in the 8th and 9th minutes of the second half. This would tie the former goals in a game record set by Schoenherr on October 3rd against WMU Aviation (Romp in the Rain). The game continued at 11-2 until the 18th minute when Marucci converted a Schoenherr pass for the final Charger goal. Watford did convert once more with 30 seconds remaining in the game. Final score: Chargers 12, Watford 3.

“Although the game stayed fairly tight the first ten minutes,” said Marucci, “we seemed to control things pretty well. The team again played well and we out-worked them the entire game. It was nice see us put so many of our chances in the net. Going forward we will have to convert at this rate in order to continue to do well. We have several very tough opponents to face coming up and we will need to draw upon this win to carry us forward.”

The next Charger’s games will be on Thursday, November 13th at 6:45 pm (Electronicare), and Friday, November 14th at 9:30pm (WMU Aviation) at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers.
