Chargers Win Game Two Thriller

October 24, 2003 – Soccerzone – Portage, Michigan

The Chargers played their second indoor game tonight against Team Chummer, a quick and skillful team that proved to be difficult to handle. After starting the indoor season last week with a convincing win, the question lingered as to whether the Chargers would be fully able to adapt to the indoor game and continue their winning ways.

The game started fast with the Chummer squad winning the ball from the starting kickoff and making several consecutive passes deep into the Charger end, the last pass of which ending up in the Charger net. The game was less than a minute old and already the Chummer team had gone on top 1-0. It was apparent that the Chargers were facing a higher caliber team for this duel. It was also apparent that the Chargers would need to shut down a potent offense in order to win. The game remained 0-1 against the Chargers for the first 7 minutes until veteran Charger Keith Weitz (Dec Tech) took a long pass, dribbled an opponent, and fired a perfect shot past the Chummer goalkeeper. It was an excellent individual effort by Weitz to equalize. Score: Chargers 1, Chummers 1. The tie lasted only one minute, however, and on the ensuing kick off the Chummer team worked the ball into scoring position and placed a good shot just past Charger net minder Leslie Stafford (IPDS).

The Chargers would play behind one goal for the next 6 minutes as both teams fought hard for the midfield. The Chargers also organized their defense well during this time and began to shut down key Chummer players. With 12 minutes remaining in the first half, it was John Marucci (New Product) dribbling past a defender and serving a ball to Ken Fouts (Customer Sales & Service) in front of the Chummer goal. Fouts tucked the ball into the back of the Chummer net to equalize the score. The game remained tied at 2-2 until 3:30 remained in the first half, when Pete Rose (Collections) drew a foul from the Chummer goalkeeper, giving the Chargers a free kick. Marucci took the free kick and drove it into the back of the Chummer net to put the Chargers ahead for the first time in the game. Score at half time: Chargers 3, Chummers 2.

The second half started as the first half ended, with both teams locked in an intense battle for the ball. Rose was now in goal for the Chargers and made a critical save just minutes into the second half to preserve the Charger lead. Five minutes into the half, it was Marucci to Weitz who had posted up on the right of the Chummer goal. Weitz then turned and found Marucci again unmarked in front of the Chummer goal. Score: Chargers 4, Chummers 2. Less than two minutes later, it was Marucci again, stealing an errant pass by the Chummer defense, and firing a shot into the back of the net. Score: Chargers 5, Chummers 2. At this point in the second half, the Chummer team began to mount a considerable attack and fired many shots ant Rose. Rose and the Charger defense played well and warded off most of the shots. With 16 minutes left in the game, however, the Chummer team put a nice passing play together and found a girl open on the far side of the goal. The shot was perfect and just past Rose. Score: Chargers 5, Chummers 4. For the next 8 minutes, Rose was tested several times and made some quite exquisite saves to keep the Chargers in the lead.

With 8:30 left in the game, it was Marcus Schoenherr (Collections) winning the ball in the midfield and shooting on goal. Schoenherr, in perfect “garbage man” style, won the rebound to his own shot close to the goal and put the ball away to give the Chargers a 6-4 lead. The two-goal lead only last for 30 seconds, as the Chummer team scored on a nice shot into the upper left corner of the net on the ensuing kickoff. There were 8 minutes left in the game and the score was 6-5 Chargers. The last 8 minutes were terribly hard fought by both teams. The Charger defense, however, held steady during this time thorough several attacks. Stacie Vezeau (Collections), Ryan Potter (Collections), Kevin Tenant (Inbound), and Leslie Stafford were all rock solid through this time. The defense along with Rose in goal, kept the Chummer quick attacking play at bay the entire time. A final break came for the Chargers with 16 seconds left, when Schoenherr again converted yet another loose ball in front of the opponent’s goal. Final Score: Chargers 7, Chummers 5.

“Easily the toughest team we’ve played since we started together back in May,” said Marucci, “they was more than one good player who could score, they were a real team that could pass the ball well and shoot well. We had to play in the hole for quite a while tonight and fought hard to come back and take the lead. Both Keith (Weitz) and Marcus (Schoenherr) had great goals on individual effort. I also have to give kudos to Pete (Rose) for his dynamic play in goal during the second half. The type of team we played tonight is going to create opportunities. Our defense played extremely well to limit their chances. When they did get through, Pete did outstanding keeping the ball out of the net. It was our best win to date against a very good team.

The next Charger’s game will be on Friday, November 7th at 6:45 pm at Soccerzone in Portage. Everyone is invited to come out and cheer on your Chargers.
